The list of cases filed against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is getting longer.
Now, along with him, a case of genocide has been registered against many renowned journalists of the country.
A Bangladesh lawyer has filed a case at the International Crimes Tribunal accusing 52 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 26 senior journalists, of genocide.
The complaint made to the tribunal alleged that all the accused were involved in crimes against humanity and genocide during the anti-discrimination student movement that started in July demanding abolition of quota system in government jobs.
Lawyer MH Gazi Tamim filed the case on behalf of Golam Razzaq, the father of 17-year-old student Nasib Hasan Rihan, who was allegedly shot dead by security personnel in the Ring Road area of Shyamoli in Dhaka on August 5.
In view of the student protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina not only had to resign from her post but she also had to flee from Bangladesh to India on 5 August.
More than 70 cases have been registered so far against Hasina accusing her of various crimes, including 65 murder cases and eight cases of crimes against humanity and genocide.
Tamim’s complaint letter also accused the 26 journalists of being “sycophants” of the previous Awami League government.
It alleges that he published misleading information that promoted alleged genocidal actions by the previous government and law enforcement agencies and that it legitimized the crimes.
The journalists named include Naeemul Islam Khan, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Mozammel Babu, Nabanita Chowdhury, Subhash Singh Roy and Ahmed Zobair.
The complaint also names former academic and judicial personalities, including Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and retired Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik.
