A sensational case of honor killing has come to light in Pakistan.
According to the incident, a brother strangled his sister to death in the presence of his father. The other brother was filming this entire crime on his phone.
The police have arrested the accused. The sister’s only fault was that she was talking to her male friend on video call, which angered the family so much that they committed murder.
This incident has shaken the entire country. A debate has started in the country regarding shaming of relationships and women’s rights.
Pakistani police said the incident occurred on the night of March 17 in the central eastern city of Toba Tek Singh in Punjab province.
22 year old Maria Bibi was strangled to death by her brother Muhammad Faisal and her father Abdul Sattar was sitting comfortably on the bed in the room where this incident took place.
Whereas, the other brother Shahbaz was making a video of this incident on his mobile. The matter came to light when this video went viral on social media.
According to the police, in the viral video it is seen that Faisal is strangulating Maria who was lying on the bed, while Abdul is watching the scene peacefully on the other corner of the bed.
While filming the video, Shahbaz is heard saying, tell Faisal that she is dead and she should wake up now, but Faisal has been strangling Maria with full force for two minutes. When Faisal gets up after completing his work, Abdul gives him water to drink.
“Police learned on March 24 that the girl had died of unnatural causes,” police officer Ata Ullah told AFP by phone. We ourselves filed the case as the complainant.”
The official said Sattar and Faisal were immediately arrested, while Shehbaz was arrested on Saturday evening.
He said it was a case of “honour” killing. Shahbaz’s wife seen in the video has also been arrested.
What was Maria’s mistake?
Police said Faisal had allegedly caught his sister talking to an unknown person on video call several times.
plight of women in pakistan
There are many restrictions for women in most Pakistani societies. An example of this can be seen from the murder of Maria. In this Islamic country, women are not allowed education, employment and marriage of their own free will.
They have to depend on men all the time. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 316 “honor” crimes against women were recorded in the country in 2022.
