India came forward to help Maldives, the government will repair ‘Huruvi’ at its own expense…

An important turning point is about to come in the defense relations between India and Maldives.

Coast Guard Ship ‘Huruvi’ of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has reached Mumbai Dockyard of Indian Navy.

Indian Navy ship ‘Talwar’ provided security to Hurawi during her journey from Malé, the capital of Maldives, to Mumbai.

It is a patrol ship which was gifted to Maldives by India a few years ago and has been brought to India for repairs under renovation.

According to a statement from the High Commission of India, Maldives, this is the first reconstruction work of Hurawi after it was handed over to the MNDF in May 2023.

In this work, along with regular repairs, many advanced features will be added, which will increase the capability of this ship and also prolong its life.

The reconstruction work, estimated at $4 million, will be funded by the Government of India, reflecting India’s commitment to provide assistance to its maritime neighbours.

The decision was announced recently during the visit of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu to India from October 6 to 10.

This cooperation between India and Maldives is part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘SAGAR Approach’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region), which aims to strengthen regional security and development.

The reconstruction and upgradation of Hurawi will enhance the operational capability of the Maldivian Coast Guard, thereby strengthening the country’s maritime security infrastructure.

With this cooperation, India’s contribution towards capacity building in Maldives becomes even deeper. Notably, on October 20, Muizzu decided to take steps towards implementing India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system in Maldives. This initiative comes as part of India’s agreement to share its experience in the field of digital and financial services and help develop digital public infrastructure (DPI), which was finalized during Muizzu’s visit to India in October. .
