Scientists in India are building a solar plane that will prove to be very revolutionary. This plane will be able to fly for 90 days at a stretch.
A smaller version of this has been developed, which has successfully flown for 10 hours. This plane has been named High Altitude Platform (HAP).
It is being prepared at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) located in Bengaluru. This plane will run on solar energy and there will be no pilot in it.
In automatic mode, it will fly continuously day and night at an altitude of 17 to 20 km. It is also being called a pseudo satellite. The biggest advantage of HAPS will be that it will be helpful in keeping an eye on the enemy’s territory.
New Space Research and Technologies, a Bengaluru-based startup, has also developed a prototype of this. This prototype will be able to fly for 24 hours.
According to NAL, HAPS can monitor the movement of troops during war.
Not only will it be strategically helpful, it can also play an important role in intelligence and surveillance.
HAPS can also help in communications during war. Similarly, air defense services can use this aircraft to give instructions during a major operation.
Its biggest advantage will be that it can continuously keep an eye on enemy territory. Once equipped with the right kind of sensors, whether it is day or night, it will be like a special bird in the sky. A bird that will be able to keep an eye on every movement of our neighbouring countries on the border.
According to reports, there is only one HAPS in working condition in the world. This is the Airbus Zephyr, which has flown continuously for 64 days in the Arizona desert of America.
Efforts are being made to make such a plane all over the world. From America to Britain, Germany and New Zealand, everyone is trying to do this.
Dr. L. Venkatakrishnan, head of the HAPS program, said that it is a solar-powered eye in the sky. It is much cheaper than satellites, better and can stay in the air for several weeks.
