Indians may be most affected by Canada ending accelerated visa program

Ottawa. Canada has ended the popular Accelerated Study Visa Program – SDS. It is likely to have the biggest impact on Indian students. The process of issuing visas to students applying under the Student Direct Stream (SDS), introduced in 2018, took much less time. The scheme has been discontinued by Canada on Friday. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter in September that we are granting 35 percent fewer international student permits this year and that number will drop another 10 percent next year. He said, immigration is beneficial for our economy, but when bad people abuse the system and take advantage of students, we take action against them. The Government of Canada has said it is considering reducing the number of temporary residents. This step has been taken amid the ongoing diplomatic dispute between India and Canada. The Indian High Commission here said that the largest source country of foreign students in Canada is India and an estimated 4,27,000 Indian students are studying here.
