Is it right or wrong for judges to enter politics after retirement? Former CJI Chandrachud expressed his opinion

The issue is often discussed in the country whether former judges should join politics or not? Recently this question was also asked to former CJI DY Chandrachud. Answering this question, he said that our society also sees retired judges as guardians of the justice system and their lifestyle should be according to the legal system of the society. During the conversation, he said that every judge has to decide whether the decisions taken by him after retirement will affect those who evaluate the work done by him as a judge.

DY Chandrachud said that at the age of 65, he does not want to do anything that would raise questions on his work or the credibility of the judiciary. However, his aim is not to cast blame on former judges entering politics.

He said that judges are also common citizens and have equal rights as other citizens, but the society expects high conduct from them.

The former CJI said that judges have to be very careful about trolling. Trollers are trying to change the court decisions. In a democracy, the power to decide the validity of laws has been entrusted to the Constitutional Court.

DY Chandrachud said that nowadays people form opinions on the basis of 20-second videos watched on YouTube and other social media platforms. This is a big danger.

On November 10, DY Chandrachud retired from the post of CGI. It is being speculated that the former CJI may assume some role in the tribunals.

During the conversation, DY Chandrachud had said that under the laws, retired judges have to serve in several tribunals like the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Telecom Disputes Redressal and Appellate Tribunal and National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The cases that come before these tribunals are of great importance. Honest and expert people are needed to hear these cases.
