Mumbai Can no one stop atrocities against women? Such a question has started to arise. In fact, the figures of violence against women released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) are very shocking. Even when there was a nationwide lockdown during the Covid period, atrocities against women in Maharashtra increased instead of decreasing. According to NCRB data, during the rule of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi, during the Covid lockdown, an average of 109 incidents of abuse of women were recorded daily in Maharashtra. The data shows that even today there has been no reduction in incidents of violence against women. During the lockdown in 2020, there were 31,701 incidents of rape against women in Maharashtra. 88 women became victims every day. However, in 2021 this number reached 39,266. That is, 109 cases of rape of women were reported every day. At the same time, from January to June 2022, 126 incidents of rape against women were registered every day. While from July to December 2022, this number came down slightly to 116. However, in 2023, the average came back to 126, making the state’s women safety situation still grim. There has been a huge increase in crimes under POCSO, especially crimes of molestation and rape against minor girls (Section 12 of POCSO). These crimes have reached 249 in 2021 and 332 in 2022. On the other hand, if we talk about the figures of Mumbai, then the figures here are worrying. In 2023, there has been a slight decline in rape cases under POCSO in Mumbai. In 2020, 445 cases of rape were reported, while in 2021 this figure came down to 524. But in 2023 this number has come down slightly to 590. Looking at the rising crime figures, it seems that it is necessary to take strict steps for the safety of women.
