External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed his opinion regarding the deteriorating relations between India and Canada.
He said double standards is too small a word for the way Canada was treating Indian diplomats.
He said that from the Canadian government’s words it seems that they have a problem with Indian diplomats finding out what is happening there with respect to India.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that we had to take the decision to call our diplomats from Canada because they had asked for a police investigation of the High Commissioner of India.
He said that Canada does not have any problem when Canadian diplomats come to India and collect information about our army and here, but restrictions are imposed on Indian diplomats there. A question mark is raised on their safety itself.
The Foreign Minister said that relations between two countries are based on mutual cooperation and harmony. Dual policies cannot be followed in this regard.
He said that when a person sitting in Canada says something against India or openly threatens the Indian High Commissioner sitting in Canada or threatens Indian politicians, then he calls it Freedom of Speech, whereas if an Indian journalist says that If the Canadian High Commissioner turns out to be angry with the Indian Foreign Ministry, he considers it to be foreign interference. If this is not a dual policy then what is it?
The Foreign Minister said that the global system is changing. Now that the developing countries are standing on an equal platform with the Western countries and are in a position to respond from the front, it is a bit of a dilemma for the Western countries. He’s still trying to adjust.
He said that relations between the people of India and Canada are very strong, our trade relations are also strong, but politically the relations have declined.
