Washington. Current US President Joe Biden has decided to acquit his son Hunter Biden of a serious crime and tax matters. They granted him a conditional pardon, meaning Hunter will no longer be punished for these crimes.
It is noteworthy that the President’s son Hunter Biden was accused of illegally purchasing a gun in 2018 and committing huge tax evasion. The court had scheduled a hearing against him on December 12 and 16, but now that he has been granted unconditional pardon, the court process may be cancelled. Since the pardon has come before the end of President Joe Biden’s term, it is being seen as a major reversal. Especially when Biden had publicly said that he would not forgive his son. In such a situation, Biden’s current step seems to go against his earlier statement, in which he had said that he will not grant pardon to Hunter Biden, even if Trump wins the 2024 election. However, this pardon is said to be a turning point for the President and his family, as it saves Hunter Biden from going to jail, which was earlier a possible outcome.
Trump has done this before
Along with this, this step is reminiscent of the time when former President Donald Trump had also pardoned his son-in-law Jared Kushner in a case. In fact, Trump pardoned his son-in-law from federal charges in 2020, which makes it clear that both Trump and Biden are using constitutional processes to protect their family members from legal punishment. The decisions of both Biden and Trump raise the question whether America’s political leaders giving such special benefits to their family members is against the Constitution and democratic values. After these decisions, both the leaders are being accused of nepotism and misuse of power.
