New Delhi . Atul Kumar, the son of a poor Dalit family, had cleared the JEE Advanced exam and secured a seat in Electrical Engineering at IIT Dhanbad. But happiness turned into sorrow when Atul was unable to pay the fee of Rs 17,500. This fee was a huge amount for his family. The last date for paying the fee was also very close. To save his seat, Atul knocked on many doors – National Scheduled Caste Commission, Jharkhand Legal Services Authority and Madras High Court. Finally, 18-year-old Atul had to knock on the door of the Supreme Court.
Last date for depositing admission fee
Moments of happiness and pride turned into tears for a poor Dalit family of Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Fate had something else in store. The last date for depositing the admission fee passed. Atul’s hard work went in vain as he was unable to deposit the fee of Rs 17,500. Atul’s father Rajendra is a daily wage labourer. He borrowed money from friends and relatives to educate his son but still his son could not get admission.
By the time he deposited the fees, it was already 5 o’clock
After getting a seat in IIT Dhanbad, there was only four days to pay the fees. The fees had to be paid by 5 pm on 24 June. Rajendra somehow managed to arrange the money by 4:45 pm on 24 June. There was less time, so he deposited the money in Atul’s brother’s account. Atul immediately uploaded the necessary documents on the admission website. But by the time he paid the fees, it was already 5 o’clock.
Ultimately had to knock the door of Supreme Court
The fee could not be deposited on the portal and his seat was cancelled. Atul knocked on many doors to save his hard-earned seat. Atul appealed to the National Scheduled Caste Commission, Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority. Finally, 18-year-old Atul had to knock the doors of the Supreme Court. Atul appealed to the Supreme Court to save his dream of getting out of poverty.
What was the plea before the court
On Tuesday, Atul presented his case before the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. He told that he had passed JEE Advanced in his second and last attempt. He pleaded to the court that if he does not get admission, he will not be able to try again for this prestigious seat. Hearing Atul’s petition, the bench has sought a reply from the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, IIT Admission and IIT Madras. This year IIT Madras had conducted the JEE Advanced exam.
