The meeting of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko in Islamabad became a topic of discussion when Sharif got a clear answer on the Kashmir issue. Lukashenko, who came to Pakistan on a three-day visit, made it clear that he has not come to discuss any political issue.
When Shehbaz Sharif raised the issue of Kashmir, Lukashenko said, “I am here only to talk about business and bilateral cooperation.”
This situation not only made Sharif’s position uncomfortable but the clear stand of the President of Belarus also raised questions on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.
This statement of the President of Belarus became a cause of embarrassment for Pakistan, especially when Sharif broke the protocol and showed his warmth by reaching the airport himself to welcome him.
Pakistani journalist Arzoo Kazmi commented on this on his YouTube channel. He said that raising the issue of Kashmir at every forum has become a part of Pakistan’s politics and diplomacy, but Lukashenko’s reply shows that not all countries can support Pakistan on this issue.
Earlier, Pakistan Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also put Pakistan in further trouble by giving a controversial statement. When he was asked whether the people of Kashmir were protesting against the arrest of Imran Khan, he replied that Kashmir is a ‘foreign land’. This statement created a stir in Pakistani politics and opposition parties called it against national policy.
Lukashenko’s visit was considered important for strengthening Pak-Belarus relations, but his clear policy on Kashmir weakened the diplomatic position of the Sharif government. Experts say that this incident should be a lesson for Pakistan’s leadership that trying to impose excessive political agenda on international forums can backfire.
