China-leaning Mohammed Muizzu took over as President of Maldives in November last year.
As soon as he assumed office, he gave impetus to the ‘India Out’ campaign, after which there was tension in the relations between India and Maldives.
At that time, Maldives felt that China would save it from every crisis and even if India moved away, its economic interests would not be harmed, but this did not happen.
In January 2024, when two ministers of Muizzu made comments on Prime Minister Modi, India strongly protested and boycotted Maldives.
Let us tell you that a large number of Indians have been going to Maldives for holidays but after this incident, Indians boycotted Maldives.
The economy of Maldives is primarily based on tourism. India’s boycott of Maldives not only crippled the tourism industry there but also caused huge economic losses.
However, it was claimed that China is helping it and a large number of Chinese are visiting Maldives. The Muizzu government of Maldives started boasting about this but both this bet and claim of China proved to be a failure.
Recently a report has been released on the tourism industry of Maldives, in which it has been claimed that the number of tourists has increased but the profits of the island country have decreased.
The increased number of tourists at the behest of China has now brought a new crisis for Maldives.
Figures show that by the end of last month, the number of tourists arriving in Maldives has crossed 13 lakhs and this number seems to be surpassing the annual target but there is disappointment on the treasury front.
The Chinese tourists coming in the largest numbers are not delivering any benefits.
