There is an uproar in Bengal over the sexual harassment and murder of a female doctor. The opposition has demanded a CBI inquiry. Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee’s statement has come out. The CM said that the accused will be given the death penalty.
Hearing will be ensured in fast track court
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee further said that her government will seek the death penalty for the accused in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor. Banerjee also said that she has asked officials to ensure that the case is heard in a fast-track court.
Protests and marches proper
The body of the woman doctor was found in a seminar hall of a government hospital in North Kolkata on Friday. The initial post-mortem report indicated sexual assault before murder. The Chief Minister also said that the protest and march by junior doctors demanding strict punishment for the accused was justified.
I support the demands being made by the doctors: Mamata
“I support the demands being made by the junior doctors,” Mamata told a Bengali news channel. Banerjee said the West Bengal government had no objection to any agency, including the CBI, investigating the case if demanded.
Describing the incident as gruesome and disgusting, he urged junior doctors of various government hospitals to continue providing healthcare services by staging a protest. Earlier in the day, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel said the police will ensure that the accused gets the “strictest punishment” if found guilty.
