Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released 109 new crop varieties with an aim to benefit the farming community across India.
This information was given in a statement by ICAR-IIRR on Monday. These 109 varieties include 61 crops, 34 regional crops and 27 horticultural crops.
Of these, 9 are rice varieties that are climate-resilient, biofortified, and high-yielding with low fertilizer requirements.
The Hyderabad-based ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research (ICAR-IIRR) has contributed three rice varieties DRR Dhan 73, DRR Dhan 74, and DRR Dhan 78.
It is being said that these varieties are high yielding, require less water. Also, they can flourish with 40 percent less phosphorus fertilizer usage.
Making them ideal for climate-resilient agriculture. These varieties have been notified and released for various states and ecological regions through the All India Coordinated Research Project on Rice (AIRPR) coordinated by ICAR-IIRR.
Farmers will get help in doubling their income
The Prime Minister urged Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to actively inform farmers about the benefits of these new varieties to help them double their income. Dr. R M Sundaram, Director, ICAR-IIRR informed that efforts are underway to disseminate these varieties through KVKs and AICRPR network in the coming season.
These varieties will also be distributed to the marginalised sections of the society through flagship programmes like Tribal Sub-Plan and Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan, especially in areas where farmers are affected by climate change, the statement said.
