Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has launched a new move to curb violence against Hindus in the country.
In his address to the nation, he said, ‘We have tried our best to ensure that no citizen of the country, including members of the Hindu community, becomes a victim of violence. We will continue this effort.
He said that when the interim government took power, Bangladesh was a completely unsafe country. Yunus said that an attempt was made to spread unnecessary fear among religious minorities.
Mohammad Yunus said that his government is investigating all the cases where violence was committed against religious minorities.
He said, ‘In some cases they have also faced violence. Whatever publicity has been made about this is completely exaggerated.
The small incidents of violence that took place were mainly political. He said that efforts were made to destabilize the country again by giving a religious color to these incidents.
The government dealt with the situation firmly with everyone’s cooperation. He said Durga Puja was celebrated in around 32,000 puja pavilions across the country two months after his government came to power.
Number of Hindus is 8 percent in 17 crore population
Yunus said the government made extensive security preparations during Durga Puja so that members of the Hindu community could celebrate the festival smoothly.
The number of Hindus in Bangladesh’s 17 crore population is about 8 percent. It is known that Hasina had gone to India after being ousted from power due to massive protests in Bangladesh in August.
In his address to the nation on completion of 100 days of his tenure, Yunus also said that his government is continuing its best efforts to ensure the safety of all citizens, including religious minorities.
Yunus was quoted as saying, ‘We have to ensure justice in every case of murder. We will also ask India to send back the ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina.
