A sensation spread after the dead body of a female journalist was found in Hathirjhil, a major area of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
Locals noticed a body floating in the lake on Tuesday night and informed the police. The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Rahnuma Sarah, who worked with a private television channel.
Sarah’s husband Syed Shubhra claims that his wife committed suicide.
He said that Sarah had expressed her desire to separate from him some time ago, but due to the current circumstances, they could not separate formally. According to the police, the real cause of death will be clear only after the postmortem report comes.
On Tuesday night, Sarah did not return home. When her husband called her, Sarah said she was busy. It is also reported that the two had married seven years ago against the wishes of the family and in recent times, Sarah had expressed her desire to separate.
After Sarah’s death, there has been a stir in Bangladesh politics. Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has expressed concern over this incident.
He wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “The body of Gazi TV newsroom editor Rahnuma Sarah has been recovered from Hathirjhil. This is another attack on freedom of expression in Bangladesh.”
A day before her death, Sarah had posted some emotional posts on social media, in which she wrote, “I hope your dream comes true.
Sorry for any plans I left incomplete. May God bless you in every aspect of life.” He wrote in another post, “It is better to die than to live.”
Many questions have been raised regarding Sarah’s death, considering this the police have started investigating the matter.
Whether it was actually a suicide or there is some other reason behind it is not clear yet. In view of the current situation in the country, this incident has created a stir in political and social circles.
