The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reduced the duration of internship. NMC issued a notice and informed about this. In the notice, NMC said that all the students who have taken compensatory classes in physical mode instead of online classes and have passed the MBBS equivalent examination in India are eligible for a mandatory internship of one year.
Importance of 3 Year Internship
This decision of the NMC comes as a relief for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) who were upset over the 3-year internship rule. Recently, the commission refused to accept compensatory certificates for online classes and made the internship period mandatory for FMGs from two to three years.
What was said in the notice?
NMC clarified in the notice, “In continuation of the public notice dated June 07, 2024, it is clarified that all students who have taken physical onsite classes instead of online classes and have subsequently passed the MBBS equivalent examination in India will be eligible for 1 year compulsory internship as specified in CRMI Regulations 2021.” The commission further said that all other conditions will remain the same. This rule will also apply to students who have passed equivalent examinations from other countries.
The students had demonstrated
After the previous announcement, many FMG students protested in front of NMC against the new policy and demanded withdrawal of NMC notice citing delay in the process and financial and emotional stress in 3 years internship.
NNC gave this argument
However, NMC had said that the reason behind introducing the 3-year internship rule was that some students were getting the Competency Certificate from their parent university in a wrong manner. It further said, “Medical profession is related to precious human lives, so people’s lives cannot be put at risk due to poorly trained doctors.”
Internship Requirement
Let us tell you that students who do medical education from abroad and want to practice medicine in the country, are required to pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and complete the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).
