Ukraine has carried out the biggest drone attack on Russia for the first time since the war began in February 2022.
Russian officials said Russian air defense forces had shot down 11 Ukrainian drones targeting the capital Moscow.
According to Russia, this is Ukraine’s biggest attack in the capital so far. Russia’s air defense system destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Of these, 11 were fired on four cities other than Moscow. Putin is infuriated by Ukraine’s continuous intrusion into Russian cities. Now he has warned that there will be no peace talks until Ukraine is defeated.
For the past few days, the Ukrainian army has been attacking Russia. First, the city of Kursk was targeted and more than 1200 square kilometers of area was captured.
92 cities were captured. The situation is such that more than 122000 Russians have fled their homes. Now the Ukrainian army has bombed five major Russian cities including the capital Moscow.
Russian officials claim that Ukrainian attacks continued throughout the night. However, their defense system destroyed 45 drone attacks in the air.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said Moscow destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight.
It said 11 drones were destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 in the Bryansk region, six in Belgorod, three in Kaluga and two in the Kursk region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel, “This was one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever.”
Sergei said that all the drones were destroyed due to the strong defense system built around the capital Moscow. Drones can be seen being destroyed by air defense systems on some Russian social media channels.
Bryansk region governor Alexander Bogomaz said there had been a “major” attack on his region but that 23 drones had been destroyed.
The biggest attack ever
Ukraine has targeted several oil refineries and airfields in an effort to weaken Russia’s ability to wage war.
It has also targeted the capital Moscow several times. This drone attack has been carried out at a time when Ukrainian forces are trying to enter Russia’s western Kursk region. Ukraine’s morale has been boosted by its surprising success in infiltrating Russia and it has changed the nature of the war.
The advance by Ukrainian forces in Kursk comes at a time when Ukraine is losing ground in its eastern industrial region, Donbass.
Russia’s state news agency TASS said 31 people had been killed in the Ukrainian attacks on Russia that began on August 6. It said 143 people were injured, of whom 79, including four children, were admitted to hospitals.
It doesn’t matter until Ukraine loses
The Putin government is infuriated by the increasing attacks by Ukraine on Russian soil.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region means there will be no negotiations between Moscow and Kiev until Ukraine is defeated.
