Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain in the interim government of Bangladesh says that if the court of his country issues an order, then he will try to bring back former PM Sheikh Hasina from India.
He also said that it depends on India whether to send Hasina back or not. More than 100 cases have been filed against Hasina on the instructions of the government.
Hasina has been taking refuge in India since August 5. On the other hand, the Yunus government of Bangladesh has also canceled the diplomatic passports of Hasina and many leaders of her party Awami Dal and former cabinet ministers.
“If the courts of the country ask me to make arrangements to bring her (Sheikh Hasina) back, I will try to make those arrangements,” Tauhid Hussain said while briefing reporters at the Foreign Ministry.
More than 600 people have been killed in Bangladesh following weeks of student-led protests.
Over 100 cases, mainly involving murder, crimes against humanity and genocide, have been filed against Hasina, former ministers and leaders of her Awami League party since she fled the country on August 5.
Hussain said it would depend on the Indian side whether to send Hasina back or not. Hussain said, “It is up to India to decide whether it will return her or not.
We have an agreement with them and as per the agreement, India can return him if it wants. However, there are legal processes in that country too and we have to try and bring him back in compliance with those legal processes.”
what india said
Regarding the extradition of Hasina, India has said that Hasina has come to the country on a very short notice due to security reasons.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal declined to comment on the possibility of Bangladesh seeking his extradition, calling it a hypothetical issue.
Extradition Treaty between India and Bangladesh
In 2013, Bangladesh and India signed an extradition treaty, which facilitated the handing over of fugitive criminals and terrorists between the two neighbouring countries.
The two sides have exchanged criminals under the treaty in the past. The interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is yet to formally request India to send Hasina back.
Hasina’s diplomatic passport cancelled
When asked about Hasina’s current status in India after her diplomatic passport was cancelled, Hussain said, “Ask India on this issue, they can tell you what status Sheikh Hasina is in India.”
Responding to a question on the stalling of work on India-backed development projects in Bangladesh, Hussain said, “Look, it is undeniable that after any revolutionary activity there can be some instability. We had some legal problems, but we managed to bring them under control. Gradually everything will become normal and they (Indians) will also return.”
