This is a sub-variant of Omicron, which was first detected in Singapore. After Singapore, along with China and America, it has taken people to hospitals in more than 40 countries of the world.

WHO has also given it the tag of ‘variant of interest’, calling it dangerous.

Fourth dose of vaccine
NK Arora, head of the India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), said that the presence of the JN.1 variant in the country is definitely worrying, but considering the increase in cases and the increasing cases of this new variant, it can be said now. That there is no need for a fourth booster dose of the vaccine.

He said, “Only people above 60 years of age who have co-morbidities including difficulty in breathing and high-risk patients can take the third dose as a precautionary measure, if they have not taken that dose. At present the common people do not need the fourth dose. “We advise people to exercise caution without panicking.”

JN.1 variant wreaking havoc
Speaking to The Hindu, NK Arora said that this new variant is a sub-variant of Omicron, which is rapidly showing its impact in many countries around the world and is making people very ill. But, fortunately, the new sub-variant of Omicron has not shown much impact in India. There is no information about any patient more seriously ill being admitted to the hospital.”

Arora also talked about the symptoms of this new variant. He said, “Symptoms of the JN.1 sub variant include fever, runny nose, cough, sometimes diarrhea and severe body pain, which usually resolve within a week. The Union Health Ministry has already instructed the states to increase testing and has also ordered to send samples if they come corona positive.

It is noteworthy that according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday, 656 corona cases were reported in India in a single day. After this, active cases have increased to 3,742. The death toll has reached 5,33,333 with one new death reported in Kerala in a span of 24 hours.
