Amidst allegations of animal fat being found in Tirupati Laddu, the Odisha government has taken a big step.
The Odisha government on Tuesday decided to check the quality of ghee used to make prasad at the Jagannath temple, an official said.
This decision has been taken after allegations of using ghee containing animal fat in making laddus at the Tirumala temple in Andhra Pradesh.
Puri district collector Siddharth Shankar Swain said though no such allegation has been faced here, the administration will check the quality of ghee used in the preparation of ‘kotha bhog’ (offering for deities) and ‘baraadi bhog’ (offering made on order).
He said Odisha Milk Federation (OMFED) is the sole supplier of ghee for the Puri temple. “However, it has been decided to check the quality of ghee supplied by Omfed to rule out any fear of adulteration,” he said.
Swann said that this will also be discussed with the servants who prepare the prasad in the temple.
Servant Jagannath Swain Mohapatra said that earlier adulterated ghee was used to light lamps in the temple premises.
But he also said that now only pure ghee is used to light the lamps. “We will request the chief administrator of the temple to get the ghee thoroughly tested,” he said.
It is noteworthy that questions are being raised on the quality of ghee with which laddus are made in Tirupati temple.
The buzz gained momentum after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu claimed that low quality ingredients and animal fat were used in making the laddus under the previous YSRCP government.
