At least 7,200 students have returned to India amid violence and political turmoil in Bangladesh.
During the violent protests against the Sheikh Hasina government, Hindus also started getting attacked. After this, panic spread among the Indian students there and all of them returned home.
The central government has given this information in the Rajya Sabha. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh gave this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that according to current figures, there were 19000 Indian citizens in Bangladesh out of which 9000 were students.
Actually, a question was raised in the Rajya Sabha that how many Indian citizens are living in Bangladesh for business or education purposes. How many people from Gujarat are there in Bangladesh and has any campaign been launched to evacuate Indians from violence-affected Bangladesh?
The Union Minister said that there are students from Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura and Assam in Bangladesh.
The Indian Mission in Bangladesh has not prepared any state-wise list. The government said that apart from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, other Assistant High Commissions are helping Indians to return to their homeland.
They are also being provided full assistance at the India-Bangladesh border and the airport.
Singh said, all the Indians who reach Bangladesh airport or border are provided full help. Till August 1, around 7200 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh.
He said that our mission has not prepared a state-wise list. In response to another question, he said that in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of people going to Canada and the admission of Indian students in universities there.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge of Bangladesh’s interim government. Yunus (84) was sworn in as chief adviser, a post equivalent to the prime minister, by President Mohammad Shahabuddin at a ceremony held at the presidential palace ‘Bangabhaban’.
Leaders of political parties, judges, representatives of various organizations, chiefs of the three armed forces, Inspector General of Police, senior military and civilian officials, diplomats, freedom fighters, senior journalists and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony. No representative of Hasina’s party was present during this time.
The 16 other members of the interim cabinet are mainly from civil society and include two leaders of the student movement.
The cabinet members were selected following discussions between student leaders, civil society representatives and the military.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yunus and expressed hope that the situation in the country will soon return to normal and the safety of Hindus and other minority communities will be ensured. (With inputs from Bhasha)
