The web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack released on Netflix has brought back the incident of 1999.
Meanwhile, a former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan has made a shocking claim. He has said that Pakistan was fully involved in this incident.
Earlier, there was a lot of controversy due to the terrorists having Hindu names in the web series. The Netflix official was also summoned by the government.
Gopalaswami Parthasarathy, who was India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan in 1999, spoke to India Today. During this, he mentioned the involvement of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI in the incident. He said, ‘Pakistan was completely involved in this. Its terrorists were Pakistanis and the terrorists who were released were also Pakistanis. There is no question of Al-Qaeda being involved in this.’
He further said, ‘The truth is that Al-Qaeda did not have good enough relations with Pakistan to carry out the hijacking.’
He said that it is possible that some people were operating from Afghanistan at that time. He also mentioned the response of the Pakistan government regarding this incident.
He said, “They kept telling us that they would do the right thing and they didn’t do it. A few days after the hijack, I wanted to send my officer to Kandahar, but the Pakistan government kept playing games.”
He clarified, ‘There were very close connections with ISI, those people supported the entire hijacking.’ The special thing is that the series is also being criticized for allegedly giving clean chit to ISI and linking the terrorists to Afghanistan and Al-Qaeda.
The flight from Kathmandu to Delhi was diverted to several places before finally landing in Kandahar. These included Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai. Speaking to the channel, Parthasarathy said, ‘I was ready to go there (Lahore) after the hijacked plane arrived…
They delayed my flight from Islamabad to Lahore. I was given a helicopter and when the helicopter was halfway to Lahore, they told me the plane had taken off.’
