Georgetown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian community in Guyana as he arrived in Georgetown on the last leg of his three-nation tour. On this, PM Modi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Indian community. Prime Minister Modi said, his heartfelt thanks to the people of the Indian community in Guyana for their warm and enthusiastic welcome.
Along with this, leaders of many countries also welcomed Prime Minister Modi upon reaching the hotel. He was handed the Key to the City of Georgetown as a symbol of the deep bilateral relations. On reaching the hotel, Prime Minister Modi was given a special welcome by Guyana’s President Mohammed Irfan, Grenada’s Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and several Cabinet Ministers of Guyana, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
PM Modi wrote on social media, I have reached Guyana some time ago. My gratitude to President Dr. Irfan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, senior ministers and other dignitaries who received me at the airport. I am confident that this visit will further deepen the friendship between our countries.
The historic visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 56 years, with Indira Gandhi also visiting Guyana in 1968. Meanwhile, Guyana and Barbados have announced to honor Prime Minister Narendra Modi with their highest national honour. With this the total number of international awards received by him will be 19. Guyana will confer the Order of Excellence on the Prime Minister, while Barbados will award him the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados.
