Police used batons on protesters in Pakistan, one dead, many injured

Islamabad. One person was killed and several were injured in a lathi charge by police on workers of a religious party in Pakistan’s Sindh province to break up a dispute between civil and human rights protesters.

Sindh Rawadari March (SRM) protesters had gathered to protest the killing of blasphemy suspect Shahnawaz Kunbhar and against “extremism in Sindh”. At the same time, workers of the religio-political party ‘Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan’ (TLP) tried to enter the KPC.

Police and paramilitary Rangers stopped the TLP protesters and they clashed with the SRM protesters. In the footage released on social media, police are seen lathi-charging women and protesters outside KPC. One person died and several were injured after water cannons and tear gas shells were used to control the situation, the police officer said. The DIG said that protesters belonging to both the groups have been arrested.
