The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday opposed the anticipatory bail plea of former IAS Pooja Khedkar in the Delhi High Court.
Pooja is accused of fraud and wrongly obtaining OBC and disability quota benefits. UPSC told the court that Pooja Khedkar has committed fraud not only against the commission but also against the public.
The Delhi Police also sought dismissal of the pre-arrest bail plea on the ground that granting it any relief would hamper the investigation into the “deep conspiracy” and the case would have a far-reaching impact on the public confidence as well as the sanctity of the civil services examination.
Justice Subramonium Prasad listed the matter for hearing on August 29 and in the meantime extended the interim protection from arrest granted to Khedkar.
In its reply filed in the court, the UPSC said that custodial interrogation of Khedkar was necessary to ascertain the extent of this “fraud”.
According to UPSC, this (fraud) could not have been done without the help of other persons, hence the anticipatory bail plea of the former officer should be rejected.
In its reply filed through advocate Vardhan Kaushik, the commission said, “The gravity of the fraud is unprecedented, as it has been committed not only against a constitutional institution – the complainant – whose traditions are unbiased and unique, but also against the general public, including the citizens of this country, who have full faith in the credibility of the UPSC, as well as those who could not get appointed despite being eligible and qualified due to the illegal means used by the applicant to get the appointment.” The court granted time to Khedkar to respond to the stand of the UPSC and the Delhi Police.
