With the announcement of by-election on Wayanad Lok Sabha seat by the Election Commission, Congress has officially declared the candidature of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the proposal to nominate members as party candidates for the Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections from Kerala.
Among these, Priyanka Gandhi Vadri has been declared the candidate from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat of Kerala, while Rahul Mamkootathil has been made the candidate from Palakkad Assembly seat of Kerala and Ramya Haridas from Chelakkara (SC).
Let us tell you that by-elections will be held on November 13 for Wayanad Lok Sabha seat of Kerala and 47 assembly seats of various states. The results will come on 23rd November.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had won from Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi had vacated the Wayanad seat and retained the Rae Bareli seat.
Rahul Gandhi’s sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been made the party’s candidate from this seat. If Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wins the Lok Sabha by-election, all three members of the Gandhi family will be in Parliament for the first time.
Only after Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat, Congress had announced that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would contest the by-election there.
Rahul chose the Rae Bareli seat because the Congress has a strong history in the constituency, having won all Lok Sabha elections except 1977, 1996 and 1998.
Rahul’s grandparents, former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi, have also represented the constituency. Rahul wants to carry forward his family’s legacy in Rae Bareli.
This seat was earlier held by Sonia Gandhi from 2004 to 2019. In 2019, Rahul contested from both Amethi and Wayanad seats, but won only from Wayanad in Kerala.
Sonia Gandhi is now a Rajya Sabha MP. With Priyanka Gandhi likely to enter active politics, the Gandhi family would like to strengthen its influence in Parliament.
Moreover, Priyanka’s presence in Wayanad is expected by the party to send a strategic message to the public indicating the presence of the Congress in both the northern and southern regions.
