India on Wednesday abstained from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a resolution demanding that Israel remove its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory within 12 months “without further delay”.
On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel and since then the conflict between the two sides has been continuing.
The 193-member General Assembly accepted the proposal. 124 countries voted in favour of the proposal, while 14 voted against it and 43 countries, including India, abstained from it.
Those who did not participate in the voting include Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine and Britain. The special thing is that Japan voted in support.
Israel and the United States were among the countries that voted against the resolution. The resolution passed on Wednesday demanded that “Israel removes its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory without delay and within 12 months of the adoption of the present resolution.”
The resolution, drafted by Palestine, also strongly condemned the Israeli Government’s disregard for its obligations under the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions, stressing that such violations pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.
It said Israel must be held accountable for any violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory.
