Rajiv Gandhi’s killers will go to Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu government tells HC…

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday told the Madras High Court that the Sri Lankan High Commission here has provided travel documents to Sriharan alias Murugan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar, convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

He can return home once the order to send him back home is issued. Additional Public Prosecutor R Muniyapparaj said a division bench of Justices R Sureshkumar and K Kumaresh Babu was hearing the case.

The government told the court that they would be deported to Sri Lanka within a week or after the deportation order is issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

Murugan had filed the petition seeking direction to the authorities in Trichy to issue photo identity certificates.

Let us tell you that Murugan alias Sriharan is a Sri Lankan citizen. He is one of the seven convicts in the murder case who were released by the Supreme Court in November 2022 after spending more than 30 years in jail.

Responding to the letter written by the state government to the FRRO, Muniyapparaj argued that the temporary travel document was originally issued to the petitioner by the Sri Lankan High Commission, on the basis of which the necessary repatriation order is to be issued by the FRRO.

He said that the state government has sent this matter to FRRO through a letter dated March 25, 2024.

He said that the petitioners can return to Sri Lanka after the repatriation order is issued by the FRRO.
