In Russia, Vladimir Putin’s government has released a former mayor serving a 12-year sentence on bribery charges before his sentence ended, on the condition that he go to Kiev to fight for the Russian army in the Ukraine war.

Local media gave this news on Sunday. Mayor Oleg Gumenyuk was caught last year in bribery worth US$4.32 million. He has worked as a mayor in Russia for three years.

Oleg Gumenyuk, who served as mayor of the Russian Far Eastern city and cultural center Vladivostok between 2018 and 2021, was convicted last year of taking bribes worth 38 million rubles (about 43.2 million US dollars) and sentenced to 12 years in prison. The sentence was pronounced.

“He was released after agreeing to fight on behalf of the country in the war that began with Ukraine nearly two years ago,” his lawyer, Andrei Kitaev, told Russian news outlet Kommersant.

He said the former mayor’s whereabouts were unknown, but he had been instructed to report to his military unit on December 22.

However, local officials of the Federal Prison Service in the Primorsky Territory have not confirmed this news. The former mayor was kept in the prison here.
