Shankaracharya, who has been advocating a ban on cow slaughter in the northeastern states, and his ‘Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra’ group were stopped from entering Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on Thursday.
This step has been taken due to the fear of possible public unrest and protests due to this campaign.
Earlier, the Naga Students Union here had opposed the yatra in Kohima and had also warned of bigger protests in future.
It is noteworthy that the first stop of Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati was BJP ruled Arunachal but the local authorities stopped him at Doni Polo Airport in Hollongi and he was appealed to return.
After being denied permission, his chartered plane landed in Dimapur in Nagaland where Shankaracharya was asked to return to Guwahati after spending a few minutes in the VIP lounge of the airport. Permission was also not given for the yatra to be held in Kohima on 28th September.
Decision taken at cabinet level
According to the Times of India report, Shankaracharya expressed his displeasure over this and was demanding an explanation of the decision as to why he could not proceed further.
Later Shankaracharya was told that this decision had been taken at the cabinet level and the administration was only implementing it. BJP is part of the coalition government in Nagaland.
Fear of deteriorating public order
On this matter, Chumaukedima district DC Polan John said, “We were instructed not to allow him to leave the airport.” And
Dimapur Police Commissioner Kevithuto Sofi has cited the instructions of the state government on September 12 in this regard. Sophie said, “There was a fear of possible disturbance in public order due to the yatra.
