Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her team arrived in India on Monday after escaping a violent uprising against her Awami League government.
His team could not even bring extra clothes and items of daily use with them.
According to sources, Sheikh Hasina was given only 45 minutes by the Bangladesh Army to leave the country.
She, along with her sister Sheikh Rehana and her close aides, left for India in a military aircraft and landed at Hindon airbase near Delhi.
India Today quoted sources as saying that the team that arrived in India with Sheikh Hasina was completely upset. They had to leave Bangladesh in a hurry to avoid the crowd.
Sources said members of the protocol office posted with the Bangladeshi team have helped them purchase clothes and items of daily use in India.
Sheikh Hasina and her team are staying in a safe house near the airbase. According to sources, India has allowed Sheikh Hasina to stay in another country until she gets asylum.
Sources said Indian security personnel and protocol officers were helping the team members to cope with the stress and shock.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was the first to meet Sheikh Hasina and members of her entourage. The two sides have discussed Sheikh Hasina’s present and future plans.
Haseena will stay in Delhi for some more time: Sajeeb Wazed
Sheikh Hasina will stay in Delhi for some more time. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy gave this information on Wednesday.
Awami League leader Hasina arrived at an Air Force station near Delhi on Monday and was later moved to a secure location in Delhi under tight security. Hasina is accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana.
During an interview with German media organisation Deutsche Welle, Joy was asked about Hasina’s plans to seek asylum in a third country.
Joy said, “These are all rumours. She has not taken any decision about this yet. She will stay in Delhi for some more time. My sister is with her. So she is not alone.”
Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed is the regional director of the World Health Organisation’s South-East Asia region, headquartered in New Delhi.
Hasina’s plans to visit London have been put on hold after Britain dilly-dallyed over granting her asylum. Rehana’s daughter Tulip Siddiqui is a member of the British Parliament.
Joy, who spoke on the current instability in Bangladesh, was also asked if he had any plans to join politics, to which he smiled and said, “There are no such plans right now. This is the third time a coup has been carried out against our family.”
He said all his family members except Hasina were already living abroad for a long time and there was no possibility of Sheikh Rehana or any other family member joining politics.
