A young man and his girlfriend have been given death sentence in Chongqing, China.
In the year 2020, the young man had thrown his two children from the window of the 15th floor of a high-rise apartment. His girlfriend had encouraged him to do so.
Both were sentenced to death after the case went to China’s top court.
According to ‘China Daily’ report, the Supreme People’s Court reviewed the case and held that the young man Zhang Bo and the young woman Ye Chengchen had committed premeditated murder.
The couple was considering Zhang’s children as an obstacle to their marriage, due to which they staged a drama about the children’s accidental fall. Due to this, two small children, a 2 year old girl and a 1 year old boy died.
During the hearing, the Court held that their motive was despicable and cruel and required severe consequences as per law.
In fact, Zhang had started an extramarital affair with Ye without telling her. He didn’t tell Ye that he was married and had two children.
But after divorcing his then-wife Chen Meilin in February 2020, Ye asked Zhang to kill their two children, whom he considered an obstacle to their marriage and a burden on their future life. In 2020, he killed his daughter Zhang Ruixue and son Zhang Yangrui.
The death sentence was imposed by the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People’s Court in its original verdict on December 28, 2021. Both defendants appealed the verdict after the first trial. On April 6, 2023, the second trial for Zhang and Ye began at the Chongqing Higher People’s Court.
On May 11, 2023, the Chongqing High People’s Court upheld the original verdict and said that the sentences given to Zhang and Ye were appropriate. Its decision was presented to the Supreme People’s Court for approval.
In fact, in China any death sentence given by a lower court is presented to the Supreme People’s Court for further review, after which the death sentence is carried out.
