An amazing sight was seen in the sky of Leh due to a powerful solar storm colliding with the Earth’s magnetic field.
The sky lit up because of the aurora. According to experts, on October 10, the coronal mass ejection reached the Earth at a speed of 24 lakh kilometers per hour.
Like Leh, Aurora was also seen in Alabama and New Mexico of America.
This amazing view was seen from Hanle, the country’s highest observatory located in Leh.
In fact, when the energy due to coronal mass ejection on the Sun collides with the nitrogen and oxygen present in the Earth’s atmosphere, its color becomes blue, green and red.
The red aurora was seen in Leh and captured by the telescope of the Indian Department of Science and Technology.
This incident occurred due to a geomagnetic storm on the Sun on October 9. This storm reached the earth at a speed of 15 lakh miles per hour.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it was a G-4 storm which sometimes causes the power grid to fail.
Apart from this, satellite operation also gets disrupted. Such activities on the Sun intensify at an interval of 11 years. There is a possibility of a major solar storm in 2025, the impact of which will be visible till 2026.
Aurora can be called a natural light show. Generally it is visible in polar areas.
When particles emanating from the Sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field, atmospheric gases such as oxygen and nitrogen glow.
This sight is amazing to see, but such solar storms can cause the power grid to fail. Apart from this, they can also create obstacles in space travel.
