Sunita Williams sent Diwali wishes from space, Biden will address Indian-Americans…

US President Joe Biden will celebrate Diwali with a large number of Indian Americans from across the country at the White House on Monday evening.

The White House, the official residence and office of the President, said, ‘Continuing the tradition of previous years, the President will light a lamp in the Blue Room before his speech.’

The special thing is that this is happening at a time when a recent survey has indicated that the inclination of Indian-American citizens towards the Democratic Party seems to be decreasing.

Biden will deliver a speech before a gathering of Indian Americans for whom he is hosting a reception.

This will be President Biden’s last Diwali celebration at the White House as he is not contesting the presidential election.

A statement issued by the White House said, ‘The President’s speech will include a video message from the distinguished astronaut of the US space agency ‘NASA’ and retired Captain of the Navy Sunita ‘Suni’ Williams. He recorded a greeting video from the International Space Station (ISS), where he took over as commander in September.

The statement said, ‘Suni is a follower of Hindu religion and has previously sent Diwali wishes from the ISS to people around the world.

‘He is aboard the ISS carrying with him a number of Indian/Hindu cultural objects and symbols to celebrate his heritage, ranging from samosas to copies of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.’

what in the survey

A new survey titled “2024 Indian-American Attitudes” conducted by ‘Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’ in collaboration with research and analysis company ‘YouGov’ has claimed that Indian-Americans are still inclined towards the Democratic Party. But there is also a slight increase in support for Republican Party candidates and former President Donald Trump.

The analysis is based on a national-level online survey conducted among 714 Indian-American citizens between September 18 and October 15. According to the survey, 61 percent of registered Indian-American voter respondents plan to vote for Harris while 32 percent intend to vote for Trump.

It said the share of respondents willing to vote for Trump has seen a slight increase since 2020.

On the other hand, 67 percent of Indian-American women plan to vote for Harris while 53 percent of men say they plan to vote for Harris. The population of people of Indian origin in America is more than 52 lakh. The Indian-American community is now the second largest immigrant group in America.
