Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna is now the chairman of the five-member Supreme Court collegium and Justice A S Oka is its new member.

The five- and three-member collegiums have been reconstituted after Justice DY Chandrachud retired as Chief Justice on November 10.

Justin Khanna took over as CJI on Monday itself.

Apart from Chief Justice Khanna, the five-member collegium that selects Supreme Court judges includes Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice AS Oka.

Apart from the Chief Justice, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant will be members of the three-member collegium to select High Court judges.

51st CJI

Former CJI Chandrachud had appointed Justice Khanna as his successor on October 17 and he took oath as CJI on Monday.

He has given many historic decisions including maintaining the purity of EVMs, removing Article 370, ending the electoral bond scheme and granting interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Justice Khanna, who hails from a distinguished family of Delhi, is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and late former Supreme Court judge H.R. Khanna’s nephew.

Justice Khanna, 64, who was a third-generation lawyer before being elevated to the Delhi High Court, aims to reduce the pendency of cases and speed up justice delivery.
