New Delhi. The Supreme Court refused to hear a petition seeking caste census. The bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti dismissed the petition, saying that caste census is a policy matter. This issue comes under the jurisdiction of the Central Government. Therefore, the court cannot interfere in it. Petitioner P Prasad Naidu had sought a direction from the Supreme Court to the Center to conduct caste census. Naidu had said in the petition that the Center and its agencies have not conducted the census for Census-2021 till date. Initially it has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then several times. Due to the delay in the census, a big gap has arisen in the data. Advocate Ravi Shankar Jandiala, appearing for the petitioner, said that many countries have conducted caste census, but India has not done so yet. The 1992 Indra Sahni decision states that this census should be done from time to time.
