The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
According to the August 20 cause list uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud will hear the matter titled ‘Incident of alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and connected issues’ on Tuesday.
The Calcutta High Court recently handed over the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
The rape-murder case of a junior doctor in a seminar hall of a government hospital has sparked widespread protests.
The Supreme Court’s intervention comes in the wake of growing public pressure in the case and allegations of mishandling of the case by the state authorities.
The case, already under investigation by the CBI, has raised serious concerns about the safety of medical professionals, especially women, in India.
Protests are being held across the country and demands are being made to provide justice to the victim. The victim was posted as a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
She was brutally attacked in the seminar hall of the hospital and was raped and then murdered.
The victim’s family and protesters allege that the crime was a gangrape and demand a thorough investigation to bring all the culprits to justice. The postmortem report has confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted before her death.
The High Court had handed over the investigation to the CBI
While handing over the rape and murder case to the CBI, the High Court observed that Dr Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, should have been questioned first in connection with the case.
The High Court had also asked the state government to submit a status report on the investigation. The court also questioned the delay in recording the statement of the former principal and asked what the state government was doing to address the concerns of the protesting doctors.
At the same time, the court had also expressed displeasure over the vandalism that took place in the hospital.
The High Court had said that the demolition of the medical facility was a complete failure of the state machinery. The court had said that it would close the hospital and remove everyone from there.
