Let us tell you that on August 17, a petition was filed before the Supreme Court on the same issue amid nationwide outrage and strike by the medical fraternity. In this letter petition sent to the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court was urged to take suo motu cognizance of the horrific and shameful incident of gang rape and murder of a post graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata on August 9. Satyam Singh, the lawyer of petitioner Dr. Monica Singh, BDS of Army College of Dental Sciences, Secunderabad, had requested the court to ensure a fair investigation into the attack on RG Kar Medical College by anti-social elements on August 14. The letter also pleaded to order the deployment of central forces for the security of RG Kar Medical College and its staff till the case is pending. It was argued that this step is extremely important in view of the failure of local law and enforcement agencies to prevent the attack and vandalism at the crime scene.
