New Delhi. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to the cause list of August 20, a bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had transferred the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI. The rape and murder of a junior doctor in a seminar hall of a government hospital has sparked widespread protests.
The Supreme Court’s intervention comes in the wake of mounting public pressure and allegations of mishandling of the case by the state authorities. Protests are being held across the country demanding justice for the victim.
The victim was posted as a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. She was brutally attacked and raped and then murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital. The victim’s family and protesters allege that the incident was a gangrape and are demanding a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
