Bangladesh has elected its new Chief Justice amid anti-government protests that have turned violent.
Just hours after the resignation of former Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan, the name of the new Chief Justice was announced by the interim government of Bangladesh late on Saturday night.
With this announcement, Syed Refat Ahmed has become the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has appointed Justice Syed Refat Ahmed as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh under the Constitution.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigned. The protesting students demanding his resignation had started surrounding the Supreme Court since Saturday morning.
Earlier, Chief Justice Hassan had decided to call a joint meeting of the judges, following which the students started demanding his resignation.
The protesting students had given an ultimatum that if he did not resign, the residences of all the judges would be surrounded.
A large number of students who reached the Supreme Court started raising slogans. The Bangladeshi army was present there for security. The army was constantly appealing to the students to maintain peace.
The protesting students accused the Chief Justice of meeting former PM Sheikh Hasina and working according to her instructions. Sheikh Hasina has already resigned on 5 August and has come to India.
