The Taliban, who are in power in Afghanistan, participated in climate talks organized by the United Nations for the first time.
Taliban has sent a delegation to Bokaro, the capital of Azerbaijan, to participate in this conference.
According to the news agency report, the Taliban delegation that arrived to participate in these talks has observer status because the Taliban does not have official recognition as the government of Afghanistan.
This is the first time since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan three years ago in 2021 that a Taliban delegation has arrived to participate in a UN meeting. This United Nations meeting is being held in Azerbaijan.
Talking about Afghanistan’s climate, Taliban minister Matuil Haq emphasized that Afghanistan’s climate is being most affected by climate change.
He said that our country Afghanistan is in dire need of global assistance to deal with extreme weather challenges like irregular rainfall, prolonged drought and devastating flash floods.
Flash Flood
Haq said that earlier this year, heavy rains had caused devastating floods in northern Afghanistan, as a result of which more than 350 people lost their lives.
Climate scientists have also noted an approximately 25 percent increase in extreme rainfall in the region over the last four decades.
Demand for bilateral talks with America
The Taliban, which is trying to get recognition for its government in Afghanistan at the global level, has demanded bilateral talks with various countries including America in Baku.
Haq said, I want America to help us deal with climate change. Haq said that if America or any other country helps us, we will increase cooperation.
In response to a UN report it said women face disproportionate risks from climate change.
However, Haq said that the impacts of climate change are not determined by caste, religion and gender. It is affecting everyone equally.
