Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Japanese Prime Minister said, “Iran’s attack is completely unacceptable. We strongly condemn this.

“At the same time, Japan and the United States will cooperate fully to calm the situation and prevent it from escalating into a full-scale war.” During this time, the 67-year-old former Defense Minister has also supported the formation of a regional military alliance for mutual defense on the lines of NATO.

Ishiba has said that the Japan-US defense alliance strengthened significantly during the government of his first, Fumio Kishida. Ishiba said he told Biden that he would inherit that policy and try to make it stronger.

“I told Biden we would also like to strengthen the network of like-minded countries,” Ishiba said, mentioning India, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines. Japan’s Foreign Ministry said the two leaders agreed to continue cooperation on issues related to China, North Korea and the Ukraine war.

The White House also issued a statement saying Biden had called Shigeru to congratulate him on becoming prime minister.

“The President said he looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Ishiba to deepen the US-Japan global partnership,” the statement said. Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping had also congratulated Ishiba.
