It is often believed that the main reason for sex tourism in a country is poverty.
Lack of employment opportunities, especially for women from poor backgrounds, pushes them into prostitution.
However, Tokyo, the capital of Japan, which is counted among the most prosperous countries in the world, is emerging as the center of Asia’s new sex tourism, which raises many questions.
Japan saw its best period of economic growth ever. The country also attracted foreign investment. However now the situation has changed.
Tokyo has now become the hottest destination for sex tourism, attracting foreign men looking for such experiences.
The main reason behind such changes is the continuous depreciation of the country’s currency yen and increasing poverty.
Yoshihide Tanaka, secretary general of the Japan Liaison Council Protecting Youths (Siboren), stressed the seriousness of the situation while discussing the current situation. He says, “Japan has become a poor country.
Travel restrictions were lifted after the Covid pandemic. Soon after this the number of foreigners coming here started increasing. Tanaka says the foreign men come from many countries. There are whites, Asians, blacks, people join them. Although most are Chinese.
Tanaka said that in response to the demands of these tourists, many teenage girls and girls in their 20s are turning to the sex industry.
According to Tokyohive, prostitution business has increased rapidly in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district in recent times. Tanaka stressed that women continue to be exploited in the region’s maze of bars, love hotels and host clubs.
Young women seeking employment and a better standard of living in Kabukicho often turn to sex work due to increasing financial pressures.
Once stuck in this industry they have to face many challenges. Many times abortion also has to be done. It is noteworthy that half of their customers are foreign citizens. Additionally, clients sometimes subject these women to violence, which is not even reported.
The situation is made worse by the attitude of the police and government officials who do not support women involved in the sex trade. The surprising thing is that even high level officials are maintaining silence on this issue.
