The central government decided to exclude life insurance policies and health insurance premiums of senior citizens from the purview of GST. On this decision of the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that this decision is the result of continuous efforts of the state government. He said that it seems that the Central Government is under pressure to cut taxes to benefit the common people.

An official said that the state ministerial panel supported the tax cut for the common people. Health insurance premiums for common people with coverage up to Rs 5 lakh can also be taken out of the purview of GST. This will be done in the GST Council meeting to be held next month under the chairmanship of the Finance Minister. The GoM, which takes decisions regarding GST on health and life insurance premiums, held a meeting on Saturday. He said in this meeting that health insurance above Rs 5 lakh will continue to attract 18 per cent GST.

I warned him that his decision to impose 18 per cent GST on health and medical insurance would prevent vulnerable individuals from securing their insurance coverage,” he said.
Mamata Banerjee further said, “This has happened due to continuous pressure from our side. Our leaders have stood strongly against anti-people policies. Our MPs are fighting. Our Finance Minister also fought well.” He said that the final decision will be taken by the GST Council. If he takes a soft decision then lakhs of families across the country will be greatly benefited.
