The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday agreed to hear petitions seeking a stay on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA). The case will be heard on March 19.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led central government had implemented the CAA on Monday.

The law paves a path to citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim immigrants who entered India before December 31, 2014, from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Under the rules of CAA notified by the Central Government, people of Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities who have come to India from these countries will be given Indian citizenship.

Earlier, several applications were filed in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), one of the petitioners challenging the CAA, has requested the court to ensure that no punitive action is taken against people belonging to the Muslim community until the writ petitions filed earlier are disposed of. The petition has urged the top court to direct the Center to also allow people from the Muslim community to apply for citizenship and submit a report on their eligibility. ,

The ‘Democratic Youth Federation of India’ has also filed a separate petition requesting a stay on the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

The top court is already considering various petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the CAA.

Seeking a stay on the rules, the petition said that about 250 petitions challenging the provisions of the CAA are pending before the apex court.
