A case going on in Avignon, a small town in France, has shaken the entire country.
A 71-year-old retired man is accused of drugging his wife into unconsciousness and then inviting hundreds of strangers to rape her.
50 other men involved in this case are also facing trial, who are accused of raping this elderly woman.
The age of these accused is between 26 and 74 years. Police investigation revealed that 51 out of 72 men have been identified. These men are accused of 92 rapes.
The woman had no idea
The most horrific aspect of this heinous crime is that the woman had no idea about the atrocities being committed. She was given drugs in such a high amount that she could not regain consciousness.
The victim was used as an object, whose soul was trampled upon for years. According to the woman’s lawyers, she wants the case to be made public in full.
Her lawyer, Stephane Babonneau, said the woman’s wish was for the case to be “completely public until the end.” The court’s chief justice, Roger Arata, also confirmed that all hearings would be held in public.
The woman’s lawyer said, “She wants to spread as much awareness as possible about what happened to her so that such incidents never happen again.”
Still, the trial would be “a terrible ordeal” for him, another of his lawyers, Antoine Camus.
“For the first time, she has to remember the rapes she has endured for 10 years,” he told news agency AFP. He said his client had “no memory” of the rapes and only learned about them in 2020.
The cruel husband was caught like this
The woman arrived at the court with her three children. She said she did not want a closed-door hearing because “that is what her attackers wanted.” Police began investigating the accused, Dominic P., in September 2020 after he was caught by a security guard making pornographic videos under the skirts of three women at a shopping center.
Police said they found hundreds of photos and videos of his wife on his computer, in which she appeared unconscious and mostly in a crumpled position. The images allegedly showed her being raped dozens of times in the couple’s home, in a village of 6,000 people about 33 kilometers (15 miles) from Avignon in Provence.
He used to invite strangers to his home
Not only this, the police have also found chats on a site called coco.fr. The police have shut down this site. Through the site, strangers were invited to come to their homes and have ‘sex’ with their wives.
The accused, Dominique P, admitted to police that he had given his wife powerful tranquillisers. The rapes began in 2011, when the couple were living near Paris, and continued even after they moved to Majan two years later.
According to prosecutors, the husband also participated in the rapes, videotaped them, and used abusive language to encourage other men to rape them.
The accused rapists also include a forklift driver, a fire brigade officer, a company owner and a journalist.
Some were single, some were married or divorced, and some were family men. Most committed the rape only once, but some raped the woman up to six times.
This case has questioned not only the judicial process in France but also social norms. This is a crime that has forced people to think about the level to which humanity can stoop.
After this case, a debate has started in France about women’s safety and justice system. People are demanding that the harshest punishment should be given in this case and stringent provisions should be added in the law for such crimes.
