The statue depicting the independence of Bangladesh and the surrender of Pakistan in the 1971 war was vandalised.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a photo of the incident. He said, ‘anti-India miscreants’ vandalised the statue.
Bangladesh has been burning in the fire of violence since last week. During this period more than 400 people have died.
Tharoor wrote, ‘The statues in the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex in Mujibnagar were destroyed by anti-India rioters. It is very sad to see them like this.
Before this, there have been attacks on Indian cultural centres, temples and houses of Hindus at many places.
All this is happening at a time when there are reports that some Muslim citizens are protecting the homes and places of worship of other minorities.
He further wrote, ‘The agenda of some agitators is very clear. It is important for Mohammad Yunus and his interim government to take necessary steps to restore law and order for the interests of all Bangladeshis of every religion.
India stands with the people of Bangladesh in this time of turmoil but there can be no excuse for such chaos.’
when Bangladesh became independent
Bangladesh got independence after the war in 1971. Not only this, Pakistan also had to face a crushing defeat in that war.
The special thing is that this statue also depicted the surrender of Pakistan. During that time, Army Major General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi along with his 93 thousand soldiers surrendered to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora.
Then Arora was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India’s Eastern Command. The special thing is that this was the second time after the Second World War that an army had surrendered on such a large scale.
