The warning issued by the World Economic Forum and the Meteorological Department has increased the concern

New Delhi. These days, heavy rains are being witnessed in many states of the country. The Meteorological Department of India has also predicted more than normal rainfall this year. Meanwhile, the World Economic Forum and the Meteorological Department have warned that there will be record rainfall this time. Excessive rain in the country will become a disaster for agriculture and public life. After this warning, farmers are most worried. At the same time, the World Economic Forum has released a report, which states that due to excessive rain between 2015-2021, crops in about 34 million hectares have been damaged. This report came at a time when the country has been receiving 5 percent more rainfall than normal since June 1. In such a situation, the question is arising again whether there will be damage due to excessive rain this time too or not?
The World Economic Forum report states that excessive rain in the past has caused damage to crops in India. About 40 percent of the population in the country is dependent on agriculture and related resources. Between 2015 and 2021, 33.9 million hectares of crops were damaged. While 35 million hectares of crops were affected due to drought. The country suffered a loss of $159 billion in 2021.
Agricultural experts say that drought causes the most damage to farmers as compared to heavy rains and floods. Whenever there is heavy rain, Rabi crops benefit more from it. Between excessive rain and excessive drought, excessive drought is comparatively more harmful for farmers because the effect of rain lasts only for a few days. On the other hand, the effect of drought lasts for a longer period. On the other hand, the Rabi crop is often good in the year in which there is heavy rain. In such a situation, the farmers get compensated for their losses to a great extent.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a low pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal, which is likely to intensify further. Due to its effect, heavy rains are expected in eastern and central India during the next week. Apart from this, heavy to very heavy rains are likely in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka during the next 2-3 days. At the same time, widespread light/moderate rains may occur in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till August 20. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan are also likely to receive scattered to widespread rainfall.
