The opposition on Tuesday continued its attack against BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s statement on farmers.
A Congress-backed resolution was passed in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly to condemn Kangana’s remarks, while the Aam Aadmi Party held protests at various places in Haryana.
Ranaut, an MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, had shared a clip of an interview she gave to Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar in which she said if the country did not have strong leadership, a Bangladesh-like situation could have arisen in India.
He alleged that bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place during the farmers’ protest against the three now-repealed farm laws. He accused China and the US of being involved in this conspiracy.
Kangana Ranaut’s remarks led to a heated debate in the Assembly of her Congress-ruled home state Himachal Pradesh as the House passed a resolution condemning the remarks. Haryana is due to hold assembly elections on October 1.
In view of this, the opposition targeted the ruling BJP on this issue. The Haryana unit of AAP protested in the state against Ranaut’s remarks.
An AAP leader said that his statement reflects the BJP’s mindset towards farmers. AAP leaders and workers protested at many places including Jind, Yamunanagar and Panchkula.
‘BJP is making superficial promises to farmers’
Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi also targeted Ranaut. She hoped that she would apologize for her remarks and the BJP would express regret over it. In a post released on the social media platform X, she said, ‘Kangana Ranaut has not apologized for her statement against the farmers.
The BJP statement does not express any regret for the allegations levelled by her against the farmers. She is a member of the BJP and an MP.
If no action is taken against them, then it would be fair to say that the BJP is only making superficial promises to the farmers.”
The BJP on Monday distanced itself from Ranaut’s statement, expressing disagreement with it. The party said in a statement, ‘The statement made by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut in the context of the farmers’ movement is not the party’s opinion. The BJP expresses disagreement with Kangana Ranaut’s statement.
On behalf of the party, Kangana Ranaut is neither permitted nor authorised to make any statement speaking on party policy issues.’
The statement said that Kangana Ranaut has been instructed by the BJP not to make any such statement in future. Thakur said that the BJP is with the party leadership and as per tradition, a person who is not present in the House cannot be discussed.
Farmers are angry with Kangana Ranaut’s comment
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu supported the proposal and said that the BJP should have come forward to discuss the issue.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, while supporting the resolution, said that farmers were angry with Ranaut’s remarks and the BJP should seriously consider its conduct.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi said an FIR should be filed against the actress as her comments could lead to a law and order situation. Congress MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore said Kangana has a habit of making such comments.
Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania pacified the agitated members by saying that the resolution presented to condemn Kangana Ranaut’s remarks is passed by the House. Now there is no need for further discussion.
Anurag Dhanda, senior vice-president of the AAP’s Haryana unit, led the protest in Yamunanagar district. The protesters carried placards carrying slogans against the BJP government.
Meanwhile, AAP’s Haryana unit chief Sushil Gupta criticised Ranaut for her remarks and termed it shameful. Gupta alleged that the BJP hates farmers because they forced the government to withdraw the black farm laws.
The AAP state president said that Ranaut has been making such statements about farmers earlier as well. He alleged that this is the mentality of the BJP, which honours those who abuse farmers with posts. Gupta alleged that this exposes the BJP’s mentality towards farmers.
